These brooches were designed during the lockdown at the beginning of 2021. They were made in reflection and response to the pandemic and all that is has held. They encompass ideas about loss, grief, and separation as well as hope and freedom. Whilst they were made as a specific response to the 2020-21 global pandemic they hopefully also reflect something more universal about our human experience.
Yearning for freedom was part of the inspiration for this piece as was the quote from Dostoevsky from which I have drawn the title:
"The darker the night, the brighter the stars.The deeper the grief, the closer is God."
