I first exhibited with Dazzle the Christmas after I graduated from Middlesex Polytechnic where I spent my final year making wooden jewellery. I loved working with wood but it was very labour intensive and I soon realised that it wasn’t how I could make a living! I wanted my brooch to include a bit of wood and this slice of pear was one of a handful of pieces given to me by my brother that I’d been meaning to make use of! I wanted to span my Dazzle career by combining it with my most recent design using a cherry blossom motif. My Covid kitchen workshop looks out onto a neighbours beautiful cherry tree which was my inspiration for these recent pieces. It has textures of sycamore seeds and bo leaf. The rainbow moonstone has been a favourite of mine for a long time so that was the obvious stone choice - I love the blue glow and that it can be worn with anything!
When I had almost finished the brooch I realised that not only was it celebrating 40 years of Dazzle and 31 years of it being a fixture in my jewellery making calendar but it was also 40 years since I started jewellery evening classes with my school buddy Kathie Murphy and we’re both still at it!
