This brooch continues my ‘lockdown’ project and is an outcome of my explorations investigating the technique of 3D printing onto fabric. I was lucky enough to be locked down with a desktop 3D printer but as the fabric needs to have an open ‘weave’ for the process to be successful I scavenged around the house and initially cut up lacy clothing to experiment on. Concerned friends decided that they had better send me their lace and organza offcuts before I ran out of undies. The fine silk material in this brooch is designer deadstock fabric and the red PLA polymer filament is 55% recycled material, a plastic that is made from starch. Plastic is precious and as a jeweller I so enjoy the process of adding value and making wearable pieces - with much thoughtfulness.
