Dazzle 40 | Moxon & Simm
Since graduating from Sheffield in 1982, Debby and Ian (aka Moxon & Simm) have been designing and making jewellery. Over this time Debby has developed her techniques for heat colouring titanium. This process has evolved through the exploration of various methods of texturing on, and interference with, the surface of this fascinating, unusual metal. Titanium oxidises when heated and different temperatures produce different colours. Each colour requires a separate process and each piece has up to eight colourings ending on the lowest temperature. Pieces are usually backed with silver and riveted. Integral to the colouring process is a degree of chance so each piece has to be carefully considered and is unique. From 2008-2014 Debby participated in an artists residency, exchange and teaching in Central Finland, resulting in new work in titanium and rough stones and several collaborative exhibitions.
Current work is exploring the use of rough semi precious stones, slabs and pebbles looking at their geological structures and history. Preliminary explorations included drawings and paper cuts and have resulted in wall pieces and jewellery which includes titanium and other materials. This is an ongoing project which started in 2016.
Moxon & Simm first showed with Dazzle in 1983.
