Following on from an exhibition at Electrum Gallery in London in the 1980s Sam Wanamaker asked me to make some pieces based on the Globe Theatre. His big dream was to see the theatre recreated on the South Bank of the Thames, near the site where the original Elizabethan theatre had been. He wanted nice gifts to present to supporters of the project. I worked on two ideas: a modest-sized brooch and a deluxe version. An elevation and cross-section idea works very well here since the building can easily be recognised
while the cross-section reveals the all-important stage. The flag, or standard, that used to fly during every performance, is made of gold. I like to think my brooches fly the standard even when there is
no performance.
I made a limited edition of eight brooches, of which this one is the last.
A small model of the theatre was presented to their patron, HRH Prince Philip.
View all the 40 brooches for 40 years exhibition.
