Each piece within the brooch represents the people I most closely associate with Dazzle, nine of them from my time working for Dazzle and the tenth, a person I recommended to Tony and Christine knowing she would be brilliant. The two colours in each shape are the ones that I associate with that person, for example light blue and pink for Tony which happened to also reminded me of the huge neon sign we had at the National theatre.
I felt the brooch should reflect my present style of work but to change the shape of the inserted pieces. They were made using something usually used to protect a boat, I do a lot of rowing now so it felt appropriate, the shape, was also like a capital D, as Dazzle was written when I first worked there. Because Dazzle has been a major part of my life I wanted there to be a special brooch back. ‘The back of a brooch should be as good if not better than the front.’ The silver D is engraved by Neil Turner as a return favour for me making him some resin numbers for a clock, a swap, which is something I have loved doing with many jewellers in Dazzle over the years.
