sculptural wearable art combining washi paper with precious metals

Dazzle Invites | Naoko Yoshizawa

Naoko Yoshizawa graduated from the Department of Jewellery and Silversmithing at Edinburgh College of Art.

Naoko creates beautiful sculptural wearable art by combining one of Japan's traditional materials, washi (Japanese paper), with precious metals. She chose washi as the material for her jewellery because it is one of the most familiar materials in Japanese life, traditionally used in a variety of crafts, from children's toys to doors, lampshades, and other furniture. Each piece of washi used for jewellery is carefully hand-dyed to create delicate colour gradations inspired by the colours of nature, such as the ocean and the sky at sunset. The combination of soft washi paper and hard precious metals creates a beautiful contrast, resulting in jewellery with a dramatic and beautiful sculptural silhouette when worn.

Naoko Yoshizawa is showing an exclusive range of jewellery as part of the third edition of our virtual Dazzle exhibition – Dazzle Invites.

Dazzle invites 30 contemporary jewellers, showing unique, one-off or limited edition designs, created specially for the exhibition. All pieces are available to purchase from 16 November 2022 – 8 January 2023.
