This individually handmade necklace is the first of a new range of stitched necklaces. I use actual conifer leaves to create the design on the front whilst the back has a vintage lace design. It is made using 100% recycled white perspex and is stitched with silk thread.
My unusual plant jewellery is created by collecting, drying and pressing the unique, individual leaves. The acrylic is heated and the leaves are pressed into its surface. I then use them like a stencil to apply the colours. The leaves are peeled off to reveal the beautiful, colourful design. This is a method of dying and embossing plastic jewellery I developed myself. I call it 'Fossilised Plastic' due to the fine detail that's captured on the embossed surface - so they are similar to fossils.
The construction of the necklace was inspired by Victorian jet necklaces which were made using links. This botanical statement chain necklace evokes both a contemporary and a vintage feel, appealing to mothers, girlfriends, sisters and friends alike. A classic piece that can be worn for years. I hope that the wearer will not only enjoy it as a piece of fine jewellery but also review their appreciation of the natural world.
